Sure, there are always great resources for cybersecurity students to study on their own, but nothing beats hands-on experience gained in friendly competition. To that end, I’m here to give you 7 reasons you should join your campus’ cybersecurity team in 2019.

Resources for cybersecurity students >>

1. Study buddies

When you join your campus cybersecurity team, you’ll gain an instant network of students taking the same classes you are. If they’re in a cohort above you, feel free to ask for advice and tips.

If they’re younger, help them out. It’ll not only make for a stronger team but it’ll also strengthen what you know when you teach another.

2. Networking

You’ll make friends in your same field, meet professionals organizing conferences, and companies sponsoring them.
Put your best foot forward and maybe someone will take notice. And on that note…

3. Recruiters are on the hunt

Some hackathons publicize your stats along the way so you can be sure that recruiters are watching for some top talent to take back to their companies.

Even though some competitions don’t make your scores public, they do offer you a downloadable record of your event log through the competition so you can always print this out and take it with you on your next job or internship interview.

4. Confidence in your skills

Nothing feels better than winning a competition, right? Now, that rush of endorphins is only heightened when the competition validates your professional skills in your new career path. So join a team, attend team practices, and demolish the competition at your next event.

5. Leadership Experience

Apply for a role on the team board (President, VP, Secretary or Treasurer) and you’ll also be boosting your resume with bullet points that read along the lines of:

  • Team captain for red team vs blue team exercises
  • Coordinated team involvement with local competitions as well as volunteering with a local high school cybersecurity club
  • Ran the university cybersecurity team practice sessions and led the team in the Cyberlympics, achieving first place

6. Gain hands-on skills…

Competitions are a great way to gain hands-on skills in a safe and consequence-free environment. Systems won’t be broken, compromised or in any way damaged so don’t be afraid to try new things and learn as go.

7. …But Beware! Increased skills may come from first-hand experience

Making friends with hacking skills is a dangerous game to play.

Shore up your firewalls, honeypots, and defenses in case your peers try to hack you.

Whether they do it for practice or even just laughs or bragging rights, you’ll be ready for them.

Joining your campus cybersecurity team is a great way to network, meet study buddies, and perhaps even land your next cybersec job!
